How to HDMI Audio Setup: A Step-by-Step Guide

Understanding Why Your HDMI Audio Isn’t Working

Before diving into the fixes, it helps to understand why you’re facing this issue. An HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) cable is designed to be a single-cable solution, carrying both high-definition video and multi-channel audio. When you plug it in, your computer and TV (or monitor) perform a “digital handshake” to figure out what each device can support.

Most of the time, the problem isn’t a broken cable but a simple miscommunication or incorrect setting. Here are the most common culprits I’ve seen in my years of setting up home theater systems:

  • Incorrect Default Device: Your computer is still set to play sound through its internal speakers or headphones by default. It sees the HDMI connection for video but hasn’t been told to send audio there as well.
  • Driver Issues: The software that controls your hardware (the driver) might be outdated, corrupted, or missing. Your graphics card (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) is usually responsible for the HDMI audio driver, not your sound card.
  • Muted or Low Volume: It sounds simple, but we’ve all done it. The volume on the TV or in the computer’s settings for the HDMI device might be muted or set to zero.
  • Hardware Limitations: In rare cases, especially with older hardware or certain adapters (like DVI-to-HDMI), the port or cable may not support audio transmission.

The Easiest Fix: How to Get Sound Through Your HDMI Device

The most common goal is to simply get the audio from your computer to play on the TV or monitor you’ve connected via HDMI. This is the simplest fix and usually only takes a few clicks.

For Windows 11 & 10 Users

Windows gives you a straightforward way to switch your audio output. I find the modern Settings app is the quickest route.

  1. Connect Your HDMI Cable: Ensure your computer is connected to your TV or monitor with the HDMI cable.
  2. Open Sound Settings: Right-click the speaker icon in the bottom-right corner of your taskbar and select “Sound settings”.
  3. Choose Your Output Device: In the settings window that opens, you’ll see a section labeled “Output”. There will be a dropdown menu under “Choose where to play sound”.
  4. Select the HDMI Device: Click the dropdown menu. You should see your TV or monitor listed, often by its model name (e.g., “LG C2 TV” or “DELL U2721D”). Select it.
